The Color Dot Font is a font composed entirely of colored circles. In the Color Dot Font, each Latin character is replaced with a circle of a certain color. For example, an “a” character is represented by a blue circle, a “t” by a yellow circle, and so forth. The font can be installed and used on any computer operating system and contains 338 unicode glyphs.
While letterforms and words act as the building blocks of written communication, at all times there are certain formal structures in place which are vital to our ability to interpret written language and information. These formal structures can be anything from the format of a baseball game’s box score, to the position of departure and arrival times on a train timetable, to the position of a page number in a book. By replacing Latin characters with dots, the Color Dot Font frees the reader from the burden of linguistic interpretation, heightening their awareness of the structures in which language operates.
In 2021, Color Dot Font received a prize nomination in Experimental Work from the Tokyo Type Directors Club.
